    Wonder if they could pair with free cooking classes in stores to encourage simple, quick meal preparation with the past-date food? Brilliant idea! I fondly remember the "freegans" I knew when I worked with an environmental group who brought bagels and other expired snacks to work almost every day from stores they'd become friendly with.

    This is amazing.

    Way to go Trader Joe's! I am a firm believer in eating healthy and exercising daily. I believe that we should all be able to have access to good, healthy and organic food.

    I'm trying to find a way to grant that access to others. One idea I have and is brewing is a charity event I'm hosting coming up in December. I'll fill my GOOD community members in on all the details when it's locked!

    This is a fantastic project. Doug is using one societal challenge to solve another, providing an elegant answer to both hunger and wasted food. It specifically addresses the waste from "expired" foods - foods past their date that are often good for much longer than the date might suggest.     Doug is incredibly dedicated to this project and has the skills and experience to make it happen. If anyone can do it, he can!

    Interesting...my local grocery store (the amazing Berkeley Bowl, which supposedly has the largest produce section in the entire country) has a discount section for food that's starting to go bad, and I've seen that other places, too. Why does it need to be a separate store?

    Absolutely agree with Laura. Trader Joe's food is often already near the end of it's potential when it hits the shelves, just by the nature of the extensive transport it must endure to get to each store. I have experienced several situations myself where food I've purchased was already expired (not just by the stated date) soon after purchase. Perhaps they institute a process to use the food that has a "best by" date rather than a true "expiration" date.

    This is interesting, but has to be marketed in a way that implores the buyers to consume the food quickly after purchasing it. I like the idea, but there is a potential for this to turn "bad."

    Sound idea. Many people cook small portions just for one evening, and such cheaper products would definitely appeal to them, as it's perfectly safe to buy a small amount and prepare it the same day.
