Transparency: Supreme Court Nominations

Since President Obama nominated Sonia Sotomayor to replace Justice Souter on the Supreme Court, there has been much discussion of whether she would sail through the Senate confirmation process, or whether the Republican opposition would attempt to delay hearings or even mount a filibuster to prevent a vote. Despite all the gnashing of teeth, a look at the history of Supreme Court nominees finds that everything will probably proceed as normal. A vast majority of the nominees have been easily confirmed, and even those that have been rejected have been so by the slimmest of margins.
