What can we do for Nairobi following the Westgate Massacre?

Casey Caplowe

I'm sure, like many of you, I was struck by the terrible events at the Westgage Mall in Nairobi this past week, and have been left wondering if there are any ways to help out.

Are there organizations doing work there in need of money or other things we can give, notes or letters of support to send (and to where)? Any other things we can do that you've heard of?

I'd love to know anything any of you are doing or have heard of that you think sounds worthwhile.

OH, about organizations doing great work, try the Kenya Red Cross. Not all of Nairobi is corrupt after all.

Curious about this image you have used. What/where is that? Nairobi?

With all the corruption in Nairobi, I'm not even sure donations would get to the right places or people. I really worry about the people in slums who may feel threatened by terrorists. I think long-term plans to help future attacks would be great to put in action. I really like Trek Medics' Beacon disaster response program. He's teaching regular citizens how to respond as EMTs. http://www.good.is/posts/how-we-re-rethinking-911-around-the-globe
