Woman Writes and Directs the First Film Shot Entirely in Saudi Arabia

Saudi filmmaker Haifaa al-Mansourr’s recent film Wadjda is the first-ever feature film to be shot entirely in Saudi Arabia. Al-Mansourr faced numerous obstacles as a writer and director, including restrictions on women working in public. She was forced to direct many scenes inside a van, using walkie-talkies. Wadjda premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival last weekend and will open in theaters across the U.S. in late August.
