Because Genocide's Not Trendy: The Gap's 'Manifest Destiny' T-Shirt Sparks Outrage via magazine.good.is

To say that the concept of Manifest Destiny is largely based on "the belief that Native Americans were culturally and racially inferior savages" is an exaggeration. The idea is much more complex involving expansionist ideology influenced by matters such as the economy, independence, and the freedom of the frontier. It would not be an exaggeration to say that Manifest Destiny ideology led to the deaths of many native americans, but one could also say that any shirt emblazoned with "9/11 always remember" or similar neo-patriotic jargon is offensive because these concepts led to the deaths of thousands of soldiers, Iraqis and afghans. The results of ideology and the ideology itself are not the same thing.
