There is a good amount of probing and punditry lately about the road to happiness, or virtue, or character development. Essentially I think this is a good thing. My worry is that we are going about it in what I would call a Corporate Model. By that I mean that we are identifying and developing positive traits en masse,
Character is intrinsic to a particular person. So it makes no sense (it is a category mistake as philosophers might say) to attempt to point us in the right direction (even though well intentioned) since, in the end, we must take responsibility for our virtues. It must occur to US that we need to develop along whatever lines we have decided.
So prompting and support are good but, if taken too far and too literally, it can erode the very basis of character itself
I would advise to stop and rest and think and let down ones guard and see what happens. More than that might be inimical to the very sense of self that I hope we all want.
