We've reached (passed?) a point on our planet where consumption (production x artificially high demand and huge population) is too much to keep most people working in healthy, fair, and in many case even humane conditions, and where automation becomes a better and better option each day. Most of the "jobs" we do are tasks that could be done 100x better, and cheaper by automation. The upfront cost would be a drip for the continuous centuries of benefit. Groups like the Zeitgeist Movement, Science for Peace, the Venus Project, some technocracy, and many others have this kind of insight.
