For years I had good intentions of having a garden but even when when our family lived off the grid in the Missouri Ozarks we didn't have a garden. Why? I had never had one before and didn't know how.
This year I decided to do something about it. I hit up all my friends and social media trying to find someone to help me get started container gardening in our apartment in downtown Toronto. Surprisingly, though, I didn't find anyone who could help. And then I had a revelation: I was wanting others to help to minimize my chances of failure and yet by *not* starting I was guaranteeing my failure to grow anything. And so off I went to get soil, plants, and containers.
Was it successful? Yes. Were there failures? Absolutely. Overall it was a great success, though. I started with four containers on our relatively shady balcony but after a couple of weeks our landlord let us use a large garage roof behind our house and the garden grew to over 16 containers. I learned a ton, found some plants I want to grow more of (green chilli peppers grow amazingly on the roof and fresh greens are such a luxury to have), and others I don't think I'll grow again (fresh tomatoes are yummy but keeping them happy on the roof was next to imposible). In the end, though, I'm glad I quit waiting. I had a fantastic time and would've missed out on so much if I kept on waiting for the right time. So join in with me next year! You have all you need to get started already!
