And "voting" as it is structured in democracies doesn't account for this. The personal issue of "like/dislike" for individual politicians has made us too polarized to look at the actual ideas that large portions of us agree on, or should debate more. Most democratic citizens never vote ("opt in" system) because they are fed up with popularity contests; but the vast majority of citizens in the U.S. and Europe DO pay taxes - and without much protest! The disconnect and lack of control is startling, once you become aware of it.
