This is one of the most interesting perspectives on this issue i've heard in a while. Nikhil, can you point to examples of systems where teachers are more autonomous, and how that's working?

Finland, which is constantly touted as one of the best systems in the world, has only one standardized test that students take before entering university. Furthermore, their teachers have been trained and are expected to be autonomous and to create their own curriculum and lessons. They are valued as professionals, and the best and brightest strive to become teachers. It's not a bad thing to aspire to. You know - as long as your government stops using corporate dollars to wage war on the profession.
