Hi Michael. I think part of the reason (other than altruistic reasons) is that buying things for ourselves comes with a burden (packaging, storage, a responsibility to maintain them), whilst giving to others means we can enjoy the warm glow of giving without the burden of responsibility that comes with ownership.
Just read the book btw, a great read. Confirmed what I already felt/knew so great to know I'm not mad (particularly related to valuing experiences over things).
