"...you will never know the man I was before I went to that war. You’ll only ever know the guy that came back..." This is the sentiment that my two sons and two daughters will have about their Dad, as well. It's heartbreaking for a mother and wife, too; being left to raise four little kids, and trying to give them stories to hang onto about the man he used to be. Hoping they'll be able to get past the fact that even though he could come home, he just can't seem to see things the way he once did. I guess you can't stop knowing what you already know. You can't stop an experience from changing you, one way or another. Like you wrote, it's up to each of us to decide if it's bad or good. A soldier is forever changed- but into what? We all determine that second by second, for the rest of our lives.
