At a root level, food pantries are a nice idea. Unfortunately, more times than not, they foster a community of dependence and system abuse. When they are run properly and are short-term food solutions at deep discounts, they can have much higher success rates, both in terms of fighting hunger and developing more responsibility for the less fortunate in the community. Charities that simply give away all the time can do more harm than good.
