This post seems to be totally right on. We have set up this system of working 40 hours per week, whether we need the money that the 40 hours gives us or not. Perhaps many of us could get by with working 30 or 20 hours, but that simply isn't an option for most.
The author believes that if we set up a system where people could work less, that it would collapse the economy. He could be right, but I've always wondered how much more innovation and invention would happen if we had to work less during the week. It doesn't seem like too many of us have time to mess around in the garage or on the computer to invent and create new things -- things that could lead to new businesses and scientific discovery.
