1st grade blues

This is the beginning of the 3rd month of 1st grade for my son, his home work this week was to learn 20 new words, 10 new spelling word, 4 spelling word projects, 4 math work sheets, math group 5 testing, reading response (small book report) and he is not a happy boy. When did kids have to come home and do an hour of homework every night? He is 6. Adults don't do homework every night. I thought elementary school was suppose to be fun so kids fell in love with school and learning, to get them through the hard years ahead... why do 6 year old have to feel stress? The sad thing is my son is smart, and he loves school, but he is on the bottom of his class... we get all his homework done, but the standards are so high for his grade, it is more like they are trying to leave him behind.
