It started like a small, isolated bush fire
but spread nothing less than a jungle fire. Like any other revolution, this
revolution too was fuelled by injustice, corruption, poverty, abuse of power
and social inequalities. And like any other successful revolution, it has
withstood the brutal winds of subversion, disinformation and
counter-revolution.
There was a regime change in Cuba 50 years
ago that not only brought this tiny Caribbean island on world map very soon, it
also etched its name on the living memories of people across the world. Handful
of revolutionaries, dispersed across the region united under the banner of
Fidel Castro and sought to overthrow the corrupt Batista regime. Castro-led
revolutionaries overran the US-backed government in Havana, thanks to the
overwhelming support of the Cuban people. But to the sheer dismay of
imperialists around the world, the revolution didn't remain confined to the
shores of Havana but spread across the world to become the beacon of hope for
social justice, equality and resistance.
Regardless of insurmountable criticism
levelled on Castro's regime by US and its allies, few will deny the fact that
Cuba pursued a peaceful agenda and did not engage in terrorist activities
around the globe. Few will also dispute the reality that Cubans are much better
off now than they were before 9 January,1959, under the dictatorial regime of
Fulgencio Batista, despite the pathetic sanctions imposed by successive
governments in Washington D.C. And to the comfort of so-called
anti-imperialists around the world, Castro is the ant that dared venture into
the trunk of the elephant (US empire).

photos that glance the 50 years of socialist revolution in Cuba and highlight
its importance in contemporary history.
