MIT is studying the counterpoint of supply-chain logistics: removal-chain logistics. Where our trash goes, what is done with it, and how the ecosystem of waste is evolving along with our urban environments.
It's an interesting study, and should yeild thought-provoking data points, especially as we think about how we use and consume on the neighborhood scale.
