I know, I thought it too: Harvard was offering free tuition?! Kind of, yeah. Third-year students at Harvard Law who committed to five years of public service or work at a nonprofit could have their tuition waived-a pretty cool way to incentivize top-notch talent (or at least well-heeled and well-educated talent) to perform some sort of service before becoming fat cat corporate lawyers. Anyway, they've suspended the program in part because...too many people were doing it!The recession is also to blame, reports TheNew York Times. "Harvard's endowment declined 27 percent between June 2008 and June 2009, falling to $26 billion, and the university has adopted a number of cost-cutting moves. In fact, on Tuesday, Harvard's largest division, the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, announced a voluntary retirement plan for professors. Other schools will offer similar packages in the near future."
