Here in the UK smart metering is the latest big thing with numerous advantages and disadvantages. Please take the time to read this post and leave your thoughts and opinions on if the new smart metering system will live up to the hype.
On the plus side smart metering has the following bonuses:
1 - No more estimated bills.
2 -The latest technology offering people the ability to monitor there energy usage.
3 - They are supposedly getting us to view our energy consumption differently and encourage change in the way we consume energy within our homes.
4 - Encourage greater communication between customer and supplier. Increased communication regarding energy consumption and possible reductions.
On the negative side there are also these valid points:
1 - Smart metering will make hundreds of job losses to meter reading agents, who not only visit each property to read the meter but ensure on site the appliance is safe and fully functioning. Any signs of meter tampering will be detected.
2 - Your personal details name, address, account numbers, etc everything thing and ID thief would require is kept on a sym card in your electricity meter. These cards are removable so anyone can open your meter box and take your card at any time.
3 - Power companies are still not ready for the new system, phone companies dont have the resources to enable millions of new phone signals via the system.
4 - Who is going to pay the millions in network development and the purchase in installation of the new meters.
There are lost of issues needing discussion in the debate. Please ensure you leave you comments and if you are for or against the new system. It looks like we will get it regardless though.
