Great event for those who want to help the environment:

The 4th Annual Alternative Building Materials & Design Expo (AltBuild) returns this year for two days. It's the largest and most cohesive green-building Expo in Southern California, presented by the City of Santa Monica.

It will take place on May 18-19 at Santa Monica Air Center (Barker Hangar) in Santa Monica, CA. The show is FREE to the public, and features key educational speakers and noted exhibitors within the "Green” community. With over 100 exhibitors, the Expo has become a much-anticipated event that brings together the general public and members of the building community, including architects, designers, retail buyers, government representatives - all with the uniform motivation to learn about and promote green building technologies and practices. The show historically attracts attendees from across CA and the Western region, and also from across the U.S.

Friday, May 18th is a Trade Only day, geared to the design/architecture and construction communities, and Saturday, May 19th is General Public day, though Trade is also welcome.

Pertinent seminars include one on "Greening the Schools”. The City of Santa Monica will present the Solar Energy Pavilion, with an extensive display on all aspects of the City's Solar program which kicks off this Spring.

Considering the drought-prone region, the Water Pavilion offers important hands-on demonstrations and workshops involving low-water use sprinkler heads, simple water irrigation systems, sustainable landscaping - including solar fountains and wildlife options - and grey water systems.

An Ecological Footprint area, hosted by Sustainable Works a non-profit environmental education organization - will allow attendees to chart their official ecological footprint.

Most exhibitors will feature interior design and/or construction-related elements, from environmentally-sound wallpapers, non-toxic paint or clay options and bamboo across various applications to green roofs, insulation options, and pavers.
