Julia Gillard is a Brooklyn-based photographer, who's exploring America's relationship with food, recording the ritual of eating and of gathering—from barbecues to drive-thrus.
"For holidays, I go some place I think will be applicable to that holiday, so, a couple years ago, I went to the Jersey Shore. I don’t know anyone there. I walked around and eventually came up to these people who were having a barbecue. Even though they were behind this fence, they were like, 'Yeah, come on, you want to hang out!' I tend to get distracted if I'm eating and photographing, but, at the same time, I didn’t want to be rude, so I definitely had a hamburger. They were just doing their annual barbecue. It's always interesting how people come together as a tradition. That's the wonderful part of food. I love that."
What follows is her take on American holidays and feasts.
"Robert, Memorial Day, Asbury Park, NJ."
