Are There Too Many Hired Guns in Afghanistan?

I guess I've kind of known that the breakdown of troops in Afghanistan involved a lot of private security officers. However, after stumbling upon this enormous chart (you can see the whole thing after the jump) at The Daily Dish my mind has kind of been blown.

There are a bunch more of these charts over at the Guardian's DataBlog. What do you think: Are there too many hired guns in Afghanistan?
