I want to personally invite you to celebrate the 55th Anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education at The California Foundation's Back-to-School Summit on Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at 7:00pm in San Francisco, California. Our guest speakers and panelists are: The Honorable Willie L. Brown, Jr.; Dr. Julia Hare; Jack O'Connell, the California Superintendent of Public Instruction; Fiona Ma, California Assemblymember; Kim-Shree Maufas, President of the San Francisco Board of Education; Dr. Tony Smith, Superintendent of Oakland Schools; Chris Kelly, Chief Privacy Officer of Facebook and Candidate for California Attorney General; Jeff Adachi, San Francisco Public Defender; and, Youth Speaks, Spoken Word/Poetry. Our moderator will be Cheryl Jennings of ABC7 News. Location of Summit: SF Christian Center Educational Building, 5845 Mission Street, 2nd Floor, San Francisco, California. We have designated this time to celebrate this landmark ruling and the unique relationship and rich historical heritage it shares with the State of California, and to expand the dialogue on education and how it can be used as an instrument to eliminate cycles of poverty and crime in our most at-risk communities.
Declaring that segregation in schools was unconstitutional, Chief Justice Warren also acknowledged that education is a democratic society's most important function. The Chief Justice further held that separating children generates a feeling of inferiority as to their status in the community that may affect their hearts and minds in a way unlikely to ever be undone. This ruling was fifty-five years ago and although we have come so far, we still must work to allay the effects of unequal access to educational opportunities. We must prevent these inequalities from reemerging on the bases of wealth and class by providing resources for educational achievement and prosperity to our most vulnerable children and communities.
We know that education is very important to you and we hope you will be able to join us on Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at 7:00pm.
Space is limited, so please RSVP at TheCaliforniaFoundation@gmail.com. Free Admission. Free Parking. Refreshments will be provided.
Sincerely,
The California Foundation
