Big Ideas

  • Posted by: GOOD
  • on July 22, 2009 at 10:50 am

GOOD and Babelgum ask artists, inventors, and thinkers one simple question: If there weren’t any pesky practical limitations, what world-changing device would you invent? See their answers in our Big Ideas video series.

Tell us your big idea, and GOOD will select one submission to animate and feature on good.is/ and babelgum.com. The winner will also get to program Babelgum’s Our Earth channel for the month of October.

Follow these steps:

  1. Click here or use your favorite FTP program to upload your video to our FTP site ftp://share.good.is, and tell us about your big idea to improve things on our planet.
    1. Send us your videos in a “.mov” format (h264 or mp4 compression preferred).
    2. Click and drag your video file into the browser window that opens.
  2. Then, tell us who you are by clicking here.

That’s it.

You have until August 26 to submit your video. GOOD will select and notify the winner on September 2, 2009. The winner’s video will be released on good.is/bigideas and bablegum.com on September 23, 2009.

Good luck!

If the hippo roller had water-purifying, microorganism-deactivating chemicals, or a simple filter, that would be better. What good does it do to move filthy, toxic, contanimated water faster? The problem is not just how heavy and how far the water is, but what’s in the water. Take a look at this solution: http://www.playpumps.org.
There are links to several solutions on http://proverbs25xxv.blogspot.com
    Take a look at that!

I think it would be really cool to invent a car that purified the air as you drove around.  Or better yet, a device you could install into existing cars that could do it.

I think we need a better way to ship ethanol, say through pipes that don’t corrode. This would be great, but what would be even better would be to use this to use sugar ethanol (sugar cane), which is way more efficient than corn ethanol.Another idea would be transparent sticky notes. Just think about it.Also, we need an attachment on the tail-pipes of cars (especially gas-guzzlers) that absorbs the CO2 as you drive. It could be replaced like any other filter might be.

how about magnets for the space shuttle? The biggest problem the space shuttle faces is solar radiation but on earth we are pretected from this radiation by the earths magnetic feild so why cant we attach magnets to our spacecraft to deflect the deadly rays? this could even be used on the ground bor safer nuclear bunkers.

My big idea is that the U.S. should drop newtron bombs on Iraq and Iran,go in there when the dust settles,re-name the area Shell, and bring every drop of oil back to America. That will solve our oil problem and help to re-make the world.

My Big Idea is a machine that all waste computers, construction, household, chemicals, nuclear, plastics, medical goes in one end and the machine either incinerates it because it’s toxic, or creates fertilizer.   The machine sorts the items that are organic ( wood, cloth, food, paper ) sanitizes them grinds up to be used as fertlizer. The toxic and potentially harmfull items are vaporized in a plasma furnace section and the exhaust of vent stack of this furnace is scubbed with ultrasound to keep the air clean

NetBooks for Change:Book return/donation system like that allows people to mail in their used books free postage.  The books are then sold online with proceeds going to buy NEW books for public schools districts, community centers, national and international locations in need of books.Sidney Hargro

My big idea is more big ideas.

I’m a final year undergraduate and, in my opinion, I think every year my cohort has gotten less and less visionary. At university we are given opinions we must mention, criteria we must follow and structure we must fall within; and if we try to do something out of these boundaries we are often penalised. So we end up suppressing our creativity, criticisms and individual thought processes out of fear of failing and because we are simply too busy doing what other people tell us is the correct way of doing things.

So if I could invent anything, it would be a worldwide tertiary education system which caters for one semester where your sole project is not answering to a predetermined assessment sheet but doing something that can make the world a better place. Maybe it’s going on cultural exchange, maybe it’s writing a thesis you would normally be given the chance to write, maybe it is doing volunteer work in a developing nation, whatever it is as long as one can justify what one is doing and why one is doing it then they have probably gone through greater cognitive development than they would have in any other class; and they will have seen the world from a different angle.

This way, the people who have the ability to change the world are given the chance to actually think about how to do it. And instead of this diverse group trudging through the most opportune time in thier cerebral lives coerced to standardized, unoriginal thinking, they are given the chance to think differently to everyone else – which is the catalyst for more big ideas.

    Calling all watchdogs…

You know the national database and website that allows
anyone to see a map of their neighborhood and where the convicted sexual
predators live?  I propose we use that
same technology to expose the locations and businesses that are causing
environmental damage and that are conducting senseless animal testing.

For example, people could investigate for themselves who
is dumping dangerous chemicals into their water supply and who is needlessly blinding
animals near them.  If people know what’s
happening in their own backyards, they’ll have a sense of outrage… and a sense
of ownership.  They’ll fix it.   I’ll help!

    Cultural Paradigm Shift…

Slowly, we’re having a paradigm shift that animal testing
for cosmetics and household items is unnecessary and unacceptable.  We need to gather momentum to help this along.  I propose that companies/organizations, with
vested financial interests in having more people reject products tested on
animals, pool resources to implement a strategic and pervasive marketing campaign.
Most people would agree that we know enough about mascara, but may not be aware
of how insidious animal testing is and what the alternatives are.

Think massive, cultural paradigm shift.  Complicated?
Absolutely, but it’s worth the effort! I’ll help!

Here’s my idea: It would take some engineers much better at math than me to make, but it would be fantastic. Make a car that is powered by windmill under the hood. The grill of the car would be oriented so that the air will run the windmill as long as the car is moving. The electricity can be stored in a battery for use in a starting the car from a standstill. No more oil needed!

First good idea: edible garbage.Okay, on a more serious note, what’s the most abundant solar collector?  Trees!  Bioengineer them to boost their bioelectric output (all living things produce voltage) and wire them together to power cities.  100% renewable solar cells…Another good idea can be found here:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plNsDEPyprk
