They say a country with a McDonald's has never gone to war with America. If this is true, it is because McDonald's hasn't been overseas for very long, and the entire time it has, it hasn't been a very smart idea to go to war with America, whether that meant losing your Big Macs or not. Regardless, blogger Juan Cole has proposed a new initiative that replaces the Big Macs with the classics of American democracy. He's started an organization to have all the big names of American political theory translated into Arabic, to give the Arab world more of an understanding of just how awesome the American political system is. If insurgents in Iraq read the Federalist papers, they'll understand more of the American ethos, and realize we are there to help them. They will also, no doubt, be too bored to plan any sort of terrorist attacks. But seriously, while it seems rather like tilting at windmills, the idea is in the right place.
