You may have missed this little piece of local news that's blossomed into a national news story - but Geno's Steaks the (alleged) inventor of the iconic Philadelphia Cheese Steak has posted a sign in their window that says ``This is America. When ordering, speak English." Some people are very upset about this. Some people seem to think It's pretty easy to argue either way. Here is one way, from Boston Globe columnist Jeff Jacoby, and here is the other, from the editorial page of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Seems to us, if you order, and Geno doesn't understand what you want, you're not going to get served. So the sign is sort of a moot point. It's mean-spirited in its phrasing and its prominent posting, but if we had the right to be protected from mean-spiritedness, we'd probably also have the right to have free pet pandas. That would be a nice world to live in.
