This article from the BBC brings up some interesting points. It argues that the exodus of people from the countryside to the city is creating environmental problems. But we've often read that cities are actually one of the most energy efficient ways for people to live together, since everything is close and they use less energy. Certainly better than sprawling ex-urbs, in any case. Decide for yourself, and then move to the country with your wood burning stove if you're going to feel guilty about it.
