These travelers come from all across the world as well as out own backyards. I had a couple from Australia wrapping up their one year tour of the world in the US who stayed and felt they got a true DC and USA experience because they were able to stay with an "American", well in my case a Korean American. I have had someone from as close as Staunton, VA stay so she could meet her friend from Florida at the airport and see the city with her. They all got to stay in a relatively nice condominium a stones throw away from the major tourist sites in DC for free, so now they had more money to spend on other things like buying trinkets for friends and family.
Go check the site out and maybe join in a GOOD cause. You will be rewarded by making new friends around the world. And next time you are in their neck of the woods, you can meet up with them or even stay on their couch. Although as I get older, the idea of sleep on couches on my vacation doesn't sound too appealing. Enjoy. www.couchsurfing.com
