Is offshore drilling the key to national energy independence? In a word: no. Check out this graph from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Offshore drilling projects that we launch now wouldn't begin producing oil until 2017 and would only supply 1.2% of U.S. annual oil consumption. If we're addicted to oil, offshore drilling is analogous to combing through the carpet for that last hit when you should just be checking into rehab.
