Drink Responsibly

  • Posted by: Andrew Price

Anheuser-Busch has a new eco-conscious vodka that’ll go for $35 a bottle. It’s made from “locally harvested 100% organic Italian wheat” and the “100% recyclable bottle is even Earth-friendly with a tree-free paper label, safe soy-based inks, water-based adhesives, and an environmentally sustainable cork closure.” They’re going for the intersection of the eco-conscious market and the luxury market.

The name Purus, we’re guessing, is designed to remind you of purity, and the sophistication of drinking something with a Latin name, and maybe even the Prius.

I interviewed professor Phil Howard at Michigan State earlier today and he mentioned that Anheuser-Busch had tried requesting an exemption from buying organic hops to make their organic beer (while still labeling it organic.) This struck me as both completely absurd – what is their to beer besides hops, after all, not much… and just plain lame on the company’s part. I’m all for huge corporations starting to produce products that are less harmful to the environment and better for consumers but do worry quite a bit about the way they all seem to be attempting to weaken the USDA organic standards now that they’re in the game…

What an elegant looking bottle! Actually, thought it was new bottled water, and not vodka, at first. The realization was a bit disappointing, lol, but I still like the sophistication of this design.
