Engines of Progress

Even as the world’s automakers try to outdo each others’ environmental claims, their dealerships remain stocked with smoke-spewing internal-combustion engines. Marketing and research, it seems, are pointing toward a gas-free automotive future, but inventory remains mired in the fossil-fuel past. We look at the eight biggest players in the U.S. auto market to find out who is doing the most for the planet, and whose claims are the advertising equivalent of spinning tires.
