Things are easier said than done, or so the old adage goes, and we couldn't agree more. That's why we do The GOOD 30-Day Challenge (#30DaysofGOOD), a monthly attempt to live better. Our challenge for January?Financial Fitness.

Today's task: Get your paperwork in order.

It feels like a tedious task, but think about how much better you will feel when you have all of your paperwork organized. If you're like us, you've been putting this one off for some time. But today is the day. Here's an easy step-by-step process to get you there:

  • Gather: If you've been following our challenge, most of your bills are paid online, but if not, now is the time to collect them. Also rummage up any paperwork relate to W2's, your stocks, and student loans.
  • Sort: Review all of your paperwork, making piles of what you need to keep and what you can shred. Get rid of what you don't need and take a deep breath. Now, it's time to file the rest of the paperwork. If there are any outstanding bills, now is a good time to pay them.
  • Set up a filing system: Using a filing system can help keep maintain organization. To set this up, use a labeling strategy that works for your needs, like titling folders "home," "health care," "auto," "investments," "savings," "credit cards," etc.
  • File away: This is the fun part. Put your outstanding paperwork into the appropriate folders. As new financial paperwork comes in, make sure to immediately put them away. As you get updated forms, swap them in for the old ones.

And there you have it. Now you've just got to stick with it. Come back tomorrow for the next task in our financial fitness challenge.
