When Ohio resident Terry Thompson released the 56 exotic animals living on his property before killing himself, the world watched as all but six of creatures were killed by police. Grisly photos showed lifeless lions, tigers, and bears lying side-by-side on the muddy ground. Then came information about the horrible conditions the animals lived in. This week, Mother Jones published an expose on the harsh treatment of elephants used as performers in the Ringling Bros. circus. New discoveries of livestock, zoo animals, and even pets living in inhumane conditions crop up in the media on a regular basis. Educate yourself on the state of animal rights issues with these five books exploring the human psychology associated with eating meat (including why some animals are taboo to consume) and keeping animals for human consumption and enjoyment.
