Good News: Malaria in Decline

Malaria prevention is working to reduce malaria across Sub Saharan Africa.

After a 1.8 billion dollar effort, malaria is on the wane in Sub Sahara Africa reports The World Health Organization's World Malaria Report 2010. An AP report from Geneva after the announcement this week reports:

The U.N. health agency says the billions of dollars poured into the program have helped buy anti-malaria nets for almost 600 million people in sub-Saharan Africa. It said this has contributed to a drop of over 50 percent in malaria cases in 11 African countries, and two-thirds of the 56 malaria-endemic countries outside Africa. Malaria cases, however, increased in parts of Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe and Zambia.

The Economist produced a graph that shows a dramatic increase in children sleeping under instecticide-treated bednets across sub-Saharan Africa since 2000:

While malaria deaths have dropped and Zanzibar has reduced its malaria cases to zero, there are still almost 800,000 deaths every year from malaria. But shortfalls in funding will make it difficult for WHO to reach its goal for malaria eradication in 2015 and this presents the public with a great opportunity to help by donating mosquito nets.
