This post is brought to you by GOOD, with support from UPS. We’ve teamed up to bring you the Small Business Collaborative, a series sharing stories about innovative small businesses that are changing business as usual for their communities and beyond. Learn how UPS is helping small businesses work better and more sustainably here.

As a hobby candy maker, Laura Darnall spent many hours in the kitchen creating confections, one of which was edible play dough. What started out as a tool for kindergarteners and special education children has grown to be a successful global small business—all thanks to good seats on the soccer field.

Darnall and business partner Lois Judy met on the sidelines at one of their daughters' soccer games and became fast friends. When Judy learned someone had suggested that Darnall turn her play dough into fondant (a rollable icing used for decorating cakes), she encouraged her to run with the idea and start marketing. Together the two created Fondarific and have taken their small business idea and turned it global, working with UPS to ship 14 flavors in up to 10-pound containers around the world.
