By the way, happy Columbus Day, especially to those who weren't working. If you're one of those people who feel as though celebrating Columbus Day means celebrating the beginning of the deaths of the native peoples of the Americas, may we suggest celebrating Leif Erikson Day today, instead. Amerigo Vespucci, sadly, does not seem to get a day.

It's also "ecological debt day," which is, apparently, the day each year "when people's demands exceeded the Earth's ability to supply resources and absorb the demands placed upon it." In the '80s, "ecological debt day" fell in December, now its at the beginning of October. So it seems like we have a few months left before we're really, totally, screwed.
