We all want people to walk and bike more, but when streets don't have sidewalks or bike lanes, the individual commuter is stuck with a catch-22: brave the streets like Jiff in Bowfinger or give up and get in the car. Clearly we need to start designing our streets like they're for more than just driving.
Good news: the Complete Streets Act, which is before the House and the Senate right now, would ensure that stimulus funds spent on new transportation projects adhere to "complete streets" guidelines. Streets would have to have sidewalks, raised medians, better bus stop placement, and various traffic-calming features, among other things.
San Diego County put a complete streets provision in a recent $14 billion tax ordinance. Here's how it changed a street in La Jolla:
