Infographic: The Link Between Hunger, Poverty, and Obesity

It's no secret that Americans are getting fatter. At the same time, more and more Americans don't have enough to eat. The two seemingly disparate phenomena of overnutrition and undernutrition have a common root in another trend: poverty.

This complex infographic shows how states with less food security tend to have higher obesity rates. Currently, participation in the supplemental nutrition (food stamp) program is not high enough to keep food insecurity or obesity at bay. The graphic doesn't tell us why or how strong the links between obesity and hunger are, but as its creator Anne Mai Bertelsen writes, it could lead to better data and new solutions for tackling the dual crises of hunger and obesity.
