Just When We Found A New Species…

  • Posted by:
  • on April 11, 2006 at 5:07 pm

A new study by U.S. and Canadian scientists warns that a warming climate poses a greater threat to species than deforestation. The results show that a two degree temperature rise over the next fifty years would lead to “catastrophic species loss across the planet” with the potential to drive tens of thousands of the earth’s species toward extinction. The latest research confirms the conclusions of a study published two years ago in the journal Nature. Don’t get too depressed, though. The authors of the Nature study, although sober about its negative implications, are quick to point out that with the implementation of new technologies and carbon-neutral lifestyles we have the potential to “save a million or more species from extinction.”

A summary of the 2004 study is here.
