Last year I volunteered to help plant 1 of 97 edible gardens planted in 1 weekend in LA's westside. The weekend planting was organized by a grassroots non-profit called Gardens of Gratitude.

This year, Gardens of Gratitude is aiming to plant over 100 edible gardens on 1 weekend (April 24th-25th). Thousands of volunteers are self-organizing by searching a map of the planned garden projects on www.gardensofgratitude.com - or by signing up to have a garden planted where they live.

It's a cool event, and I got to eat all year from the garden we planted last year in my friend Alicia's front yard. Thought some GOOD folks (especially on LA's west-side), might digg this.

It's also a good model for other communities, and a great way to meet your neighbors.
