You don't think of the United Arab Emirates as being on the cutting edge of the environmental movement, but Emirates Green Building Council, a non-profit there, will introduce a new green building rating system later this year.

Apparently it will be loosely based on the American LEED standards, but tailored to the UAE climate.

Grist has a great summary of the LEED system and the criticisms being leveled against it.
