Legislating Wal-Mart
Since protests and commonsense don’t seem to be slowing Wal-Mart’s kudzu-like takeover of our entire world, why not make laws against it. In Maryland, the legislature tried to pass a law that would, in effect, only apply to Wal-Mart, forcing the company to provide more health-care for its workers. Little hitch: that’s totally unfair. That’s what a judge said, at least. And judges’ decisions usually mean something in situations like this.

Why are you protesting Wal-Mart’s “takeover of our entire world”? If you don’t like it, don’t legislate, don’t protest — simply don’t buy from them. They can’t “dominate the world” if no one is willing to buy from them. Oh, wait, too many of us WANT Wal-Mart and that is what this is all about — denying us what we want because you don’t think we should have it. How very patronizing of you. Oh, and you are right, it is unfair to pass a law that applies only to Wal-Mart. In fact, it is unfair to pass a law that requires ANY business to provide ANY health care. Whatever happened to personal responsibility? Don’t you know that requiring companies to provide health care will only result in lower wages and fewer jobs for the very workers you are trying to “protect”?
