We remember with fondness the State Fairs of our youth. The ferris wheel, the giant watermelons, the needlepoint contests. Actually, we have no recollection of ever attending a State Fair, but they seem like a lovely and important piece of Americana. Sadly, the NYT reports, they are slowly dying.
