Love In The Age Of Nursing Homes

In “An Affair to Remember,” Slate writer Melinda Henneberger chronicles the tragic and harrowing love story of an 82 year-old woman and a 95 year-old man, each of whom suffers from dementia. The union was thwarted by the man’s son, who feared for his father’s health (and possibly his own inheritance); but the situation raises profound questions about whether someone with dementia has the power to consent, and portends a not-too-distant-future template for many a baby-boomer.
