Polaroid is dead. Long live Polaroid! The ailing company got out of the instant film business in early 2008, and said it had enough deadstock instant film to last through 2009, but wouldn't produce any more after that. It was a sad day for nostalgics and amateur photographers alike.
But now, an improbable international band of well-heeled engineers and film technicians have-Empire Records-style-actually acquired a shuttered Polaroid film production facility in the Netherlands. Their mission (which I say because they call themselves "The Impossible Project"): develop a new instant film technology, using new materials and modern processes, that works in vintage Instamatic cameras. They signed a 10-year lease on the building and have assembled "the most experienced team of Integral Film experts worldwide." They're hoping to have a finished product by 2010.
