Dear Sir/Madam,
Mohamed Akil, my only child, was born on 16 September 2003 . Due to complications during delivery, Akil suffered from oxygen deficiency at birth. During the three weeks following his birth, doctors had very little hope of his survival. My son suffered frequent seizures and the medical team responsible for him were skeptical about the extent of brain damage the seizures were causing.
Although the prognosis for survival of children in this condition was extremely poor, to my joy, Akil proved to be a miracle and survived. However, as my baby grew, I was faced with accepting the reality that Akil has special needs. My beautiful son with his lovely smile has given me unknown strength and determination to provide him all possible assistance necessary to make him as able and independent as possible, and nurture him to face the special challenges of growing. During his four years, on several occasions, he has received medical treatments and remedial interventions in Maldives, Sri Lanka and Singapore . Yet, up till today, he is still unable to talk or walk independently.
During my search to find a better life for Akil, I recently came to know that Dr. T.S. Park, MD (Neurosurgeon in Chief) at the St. Louis Children’s Hospital, Washington University in St. Louis , Minnesota, USA , has been treating many children with similar conditions as Akil, with great success when treated during the first four years of their lives. After reviewing Akil’s case, Dr. Park has responded that Akil shows signs of spastic diplegia, and has provided strong evidence that many other children with similar conditions have greatly benefited from a procedure called selective dorsal rhizotomy. Dr. Park feels that Akil is a very good candidate for rhizotomy surgery and expects that after the surgery, Akil’s sitting, standing, walking and level of comfort will improve and that he has a great chance of being able to walk independently.
As a mother, my desire and indeed my moral responsibility to give the best possible life to my son, despite all odds, compels me to explore all avenues to make this surgery possible for him. As such, I am writing to you with great humility, seeking your kind and generous assistance. What you decide and how you respond to this letter would make the difference in determining my son’s future.
Thanking you with all my heart for your kindness and support
Yours sincerely,
Aishath Rasheed ( Julie)
