Today marks the launching of
GlobalPost, a new organization devoted to covering news around the world. With the near-constant news of newspapers closing international bureaus, newspapers outsourcing their international coverage, newspaper closings, and the general doom and gloom of the news industry in general, its great to see someone stepping up to fill the massive holes in international news gathering. No idea if the site will be successful, either in its mission or in its business plan, but the homepage looks pretty fascinating already on its first day (many of the dispatches, like
this one from Venezuela, remind me a lot of the
New York Times "[Insert City Name] Journal..." pieces, an oft overlooked excellent part of the
Times's offerings each day) , and I have to hope that as news start breaking around the world and GlobalPost's network gets larger, we'll be seeing some really interesting stuff from them.
