This week’s Craigslist-assisted career suicide of New York Congressman Chris Lee is yet another example of a civic leader practicing precisely what they preached against. The now ex-Congressman Lee, a married Republican who campaigned heavily on a platform of family values, was exposed—literally—by gawker.com soliciting an extramarital affair from a female stranger. A cellphone self-portrait he sent her features him shirtless and flexing in the mirror. In light of this, we thought we’d take a look back at some of the most ignoble civic and spiritual leaders who privately partook in the “vices” they so vehemently opposed in public.

As for Mr. Lee, we offer this silver lining: You got yourself a great MySpace profile pic.
