Last year during a lunch time conversation, my friend Max and I worried about the disappearance of arable land around our community. Where will future food come from, we wondered. Will all our food have to take a truck ride to get to Western Montana? And what's the deal with all the lawns we sink time, energy and resources into? Wouldn't it be GOOD, we thought, if our community had one thousand new gardens growing local, healthy food a few steps away from the kitchen?
Why isn't that happening? Because it is a large investment of effort to convert lawn to garden. So, we said to ourselves, let's help people do that! Let's help with the work, and help share knowledge about growing and preserving food, let's reinvigorate the Victory Garden ethic that can sustain Agri-culture. Then we started by finding volunteers--mostly University of Montana students who walked the walk about caring for others and the planet--and began.
