I have written that masters theses and PhD dissertations should be single-spaced. They are not because of historical inertia (typewriters). If they were single-spaced, they would reflect their actual, completed status AND save a bunch of trees!

I LOVE this idea. It actually annoys me when people use 1.25 inch margins because that's not standard formatting for MLA or APA. (You can tell I've been in school too long...)

Any time I'm printing something for myself, though - especially notes or something that's going to take up a LOT of paper - I use 0.5 inch margins! I also change the font size to 10 point. To top it all off, I use the lowest ink setting possible and print on BOTH sides of the page! My whole reasons for doing so are those exactly stated in this article. Why waste all that paper on something I won't look at again in a year - or even a few months?

Unfortunately, a formal paper requires standard 1 inch margins, 12 point font, double-spacing, and single-sided print. This, of course, amounts to a HUGE waste - which is why I try to make up for it with my personal printing.

I try to do the very same thing regarding school-related print-outs. It was an absolute nightmare when, this past semester, most of my assignments required laborious print-outs. It was absolutely ridiculous how much paper and ink were wasted on these readings! What I'd do is print notes and readings on used paper, and first drafts of papers on used paper. It's a much more economical solution.

And changing the margins would help out as well. Hopefully, that won't encourage professors and teachers to expect more writing of students when it's not necessary. If we can change the standards of margins and page lengths to suit more environmental needs, academic papers would be less hassle, both for student and the environment.

Save the printed page. The other side of the page can be used as scratch paper or put back to printer and reuse it. That is 50% savings.
